GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- Green Bay Packers linebacker Za'Darius Smith has been cited for marijuana possession.
The incident happened on September 29th and Smith was cited on Wednesday in Racine County. Smith was driving in Racine County when he was pulled over for going more than 20 miles over the speed limit.
The Racine County Sheriff's Office says the 27-year-old Smith was pulled over after deputies clocked him going 81 mph in a 60 mph construction zone.
No drugs were found on any of the players, but a search found three hollowed-out cigars filled with marijuana and a vaping cartridge inside a duffel back in the rear of the SUV. Smith was the only one cited.
The citation is not a criminal charge. Records show Smith has an initial court appearance in Racine County on Monday afternoon, but that appearance is not mandatory. Smith is in his first year with the team and has become a leader on defense.
The Packers sent NBC 26 a statement Friday evening.
“The Packers are aware of the matter involving Za’Darius Smith. We will refrain from making any further comment as it is a legal matter.”
