WISCONSIN (NBC 26) -- Summer camps have begun to reopen around Northeast Wisconsin.

Now, many families will need to decide if and where to send their kids for some summer fun.

The Better Business Bureau has released several tips for families to choose a safe summer camp this year.

The BBB said the safest way to ensure a child's safety is to send them to a trustworthy camp. Parents can check for accreditation that includes several different standards. Each state or even camp could also have their own safety standards in place. The BBB recommends parents take a look at protocols.

It may be hard for parents to check on camps this year. Physical visits may not be allowed. If that's the case, the BBB said one option is to check with references. The camp can provide them, or you can talk to somebody you know who's been at the camp.
