A 22-year-old Shawano woman is charged with neglect in connection with the death of her 2-month-old child.
Shawano Police took 22-year-old Catherine Barker into custody on Thursday. The infant was found dead inside a home on September 28th.
The criminal charge paperwork in this case is nearly 40 pages long.
Court paperwork says that police were called to a home on the 300 block of West 5th Street in Shawano last Friday afternoon. Police found a 2-month-old baby upstairs, dead in a small bassinet.
Court paperwork says Catherine Barker told investigators that her son's blanket must have suffocated him and that he'd been sick, and she gave him medicine. According to the criminal complaint, Barker told police she performed CPR on the child, but didn’t call 911.
Court paperwork says she told someone that her son was dead, she planned to bury him out in the country, then move away. Court paperwork also says the child's grandfather was home when police first arrived, and he had no idea that his grandson had died.
Police say on Friday, the Shawano County District Attorney’s Office issued a criminal complaint charging Barker with allegedly neglecting a child – consequence is death, failure to report death of a child, and attempt to move/hide/bury corpse of a child.
