Wisconsin National Guard soldiers got a send-off ceremony before deploying to Afghanistan.

Family and friends gathered Thursday morning to support the soldiers at Lambeau Field's Atrium in Green Bay. Nearly 400 soldiers are being deployed.

The Appleton-based 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry, which includes Companies in Waupun, Ripon, Green Bay, Fond du Lac, Marinette, and the Appleton and Clintonville-based Headquarters, will deploy this winter.

According to a news release from the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs, 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry will provide security for the 2nd Security Force Assistance Brigade, also known as SFAB. SFAB will provide training and assistance to Afghan National Security Forces.

This is the unit’s first-ever deployment to Afghanistan. In the past, the unit has done tours in Iraq in 2005-06 and again in 2009-10.
