Two fatal crashes collectively resulted in the deaths of three people over the weekend in Winnebago County.

The Winnebago County issued two news releases Monday on two separate crashes. The first was on Friday 6:49 a.m. on State Highway 116 near Wiesner Road in the Town of Winneconne. A car crashed with a pedestrian on the roadway. The pedestrian was identified as Russel O. Schmude, who appeared to have been walking to his mailbox. The driver immediately stopped to call 911. Schmude died at the scene.

The second crash happened 3:02 p.m. Sunday on State Highway 21 east of Poygan Ave/Edgewater Ridge. Three vehicles were involved. The Sheriff's Office says a Nissan Frontier pickup was headed eastbound, crossed the center line and collided with the Subaru Forester head-on, and then collided with a Nissan Rogue.

The Sheriff's Office says the Subaru Forrester was operated by 75-year-old Gary Martin, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. His wife, Julie Sara, also age 75, was taken to the hospital via helicopter, however the Sheriff's Office says she subsequently died early this morning. The couple lived in Hillsboro, Oregon, but were originally from Door County.

People in the other vehicles, including a 7-year-old girl, had injuries ranging from critical to minor (the girl had minor injuries).

Both crashes are still being investigated.
