Wisconsin deputy dies in the line of duty related to coronavirus

DANE CO. (NBC 26) — A Wisconsin deputy has died after contracting coronavirus while on duty according to the Dane County Sheriff's Office. They said his passing marks the first line of duty death related to the virus across the state.

According to a release, Deputy Richard "Rick" Treadwell, has passed away. He was 61-years-old. The Sheriff's Office said all evidence indicates he got the virus while on duty. This means it is being treated as a line of duty death. He was escorted from the hospital to the funeral home by a law enforcement procession. The Sheriff's Office adding they will stand by his side until the services are complete.

Treadwell was sworn in as deputy sheriff May 8, 1995, and promoted to the rank of DIII-Training Deputy on April 23 just five years later. The department said he was a dedicated, valued member of their training team. Adding he was a Recruiter, EVOC Instructor, Firearms Instructor and CPR Instructor. They said he also instructed at the DCSO Jail Academy and Law Enforcement Academy.

Treadwell leaves behind his wife and three adult children, as well as many friends, students and co-workers. Funeral arrangements with Law Enforcement honors are pending.
