MADISON (NBC 26) — Governor Tony Evers is pleading with Wisconsinites to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated as the numbers in the battle against the pandemic continue to trend in the wrong direction.

"We are no longer in the fight against COVID-19 this is now a fight against the Delta variant and all the variants that could follow," Evers said. "But Wisconsin, there is great news here, that is that we have the answer. The answer is simple, get vaccinated."

Wisconsin health officials also strongly recommend the use of masks in schools.

"Our 7 day average of cases is 1,104, double where we were two weeks ago and 11 times where we were one month ago," Wisconsin Department of Health Services Deputy Secretary Julie Willems Van Dijk said. "We are clearly seeing a surge in cases."

Just under 64 percent of adults in Wisconsin have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and just over 60 percent are now fully vaccinated.
