A seaplane crash on Lake Winnebago Thursday night left two people in critical condition.
The plane had three people on board when it flipped while it was taking off from the water, according to a Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office official.
One person was able to escape the plane after the crash; the two others needed to be rescued.
Crews took all three people to a hospital.
A rescuer was burned by fuel in the water and suffered a cut to the hand, the official said.
Divers were in the water Thursday night to make sure no one else was in the plane.
Everyone onboard the plane was from Minnesota, which was the plane’s destination.
There was rough water on Lake Winnebago during the takeoff attempt, the sheriff’s official said.
The crash happened near Streich Point, southeast of the EAA grounds.
The plane, a Lake Renegade, remained in the water Thursday night, officials said. The crash location was near the seaplane base used for EAA AirVenture.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.
