Teachers say is one of the most important fundamentals in a student education, one program in Appleton is doing just that.

"To see these children with a book in their hands its just a great feeling," said Mary Furlong, a volunteer, former teacher and one of the program coordinators.

A passion for teaching Furlong believes each student has the capability of excelling in school, "children that need extra help come to us, we work withthat child everyday for a half an hour, from the beginning of October until the end of the first week in May" said Furlong.

She said, by the end of first grade students are more confident readers. Clark Chang was in the program, and is now an avid reader, "the land of stories is about two people that travel to like a story land."

Chang believes with the United for Reading program, he's found an escape in "reading."

The goal, is to create a life long passion for reading.
