While the Packers weren't playing in the Super Bowl, a name of one of the team’s greats will forever sit in the halls of the winner.
When Vince Lombardi came to Green Bay, he promised he had never been associated with a loser and didn't expect to start.
"He was true to his word. All he did was win," said Cliff Christl, Packers historian.
Christl says Lombardi masterfully navigated the green and gold through iconic games like the Ice Bowl, Lombardi’s last at Lambeau Field as a Packers coach, to the first two meetings of what are now the AFC and NFC, which would later be called the Super Bowl.
"On September 3, 1970, and a week later they renamed the trophy the Vince Lombardi Trophy," said Christl.
For Packers fans, seeing the Lombardi Trophies stored in the Packers Hall of Fame conjures memories of triumph.
"Who I was with, what I was feeling, the excitement I had and just the utter joy," said Angela Hall, Packers fan.
The massive replica at Lambeau Field is a constant reminder to fans of Lombardi’s influence on the game and the close tie Green Bay has to the sport's biggest prize.
"It's a team that's won the most championships, so i think it's a well deserving tie," said Christl.
According to the pro football hall of fame the Lombardi trophy is nearly 21 inches tall, weighs about seven pounds and is worth more than $10,000.
Tiffany's designed the trophy and continues to make it 52 years later.
