Eight people were injured in a building explosion in Chicago, authorities said.

The explosion happened at an apartment building on the city's West Side.

“I thought it was a terrorist attack. I did because it was just September 11. So I instantly thought, like, somebody attacked the building.” said Shannon Nelson, a Chicago resident.

The victims suffered various injuries, ranging from serious to critical, according to Chicago Fire.

Crews said they searched the building, which was badly damaged, for any other potential victims.

“We’re confident we got everybody out,” said Deputy Fire Commissioner Marc Ferman.

Chicago Fire said the source of the explosion is unknown. The building reportedly failed its most recent inspection in 2020.
