GREEN BAY (NBC26) — After the heavy rainfall that delayed Family Night on Saturday, the Green Bay Fire Department says several areas around Green Bay experienced flash floods, causing several road closures around the city.
“We had some flooding throughout the city, the normal areas that we do get some flooding if we get heavy rain," said Ray Fuiten, the Battalion Chief of the Green Bay Fire Department.
One of the areas that was hit especially hard was Bay Beach Amusement Park. The park had to use alternative parking Sunday morning because their main parking lot was flooded.
"We usually have crew members try and shovel the water out and then we also have people blowing the water out as well so we do have like a set plan when this happens,” said Sierra Miller, the Bay Beach Pavilion Coordinator.
If you find yourself stuck in a flood, Fuiten reminds people never to attempt to walk or drive through flood water.
"If you have some flooding around your house, shelter in your house. We do have a response that we can come and get you if you’d be trapped in your house with water around it,” Fuiten said.
During storms with high winds, he says the department frequently sees power outages or fallen power lines. He urges residents to be on the lookout for fallen power lines, especially in heavily wooded areas with lots of trees.
"When we get those gusts of winds that get into the 30,40, 50 mile an hour range some of the branches break off," Fuiten said. "Some trees actually break a large limb off and will take a whole line down or sometimes a whole pole will come down.”
If you do come across a fallen power line, he says the best thing to do is report it and shelter in place. You can report a fallen line to WPS on their website or by calling the Brown County non-emergency number (920) 391-7450.
"Avoid them, don’t touch them and if they are down in your backyard, your front yard, stay in your house contact Brown County dispatch," Fuiten said. "The best thing to do when storms do go through is to get home, shelter in your house and pay attention to what's going on."
