GREEN BAY (WGBA) -- It has been year where illnesses pose a major threat. The CDC is reporting record flu numbers, and the coronavirus is still spreading.

The CDC says anyone sick should stay home and not get others sick. However, not everyone has that option.

"It is difficult not having something set in stone," said Collin, a worker in Green Bay who did not want to provide his last name.

Many workers are faced with a tough choice - go to work sick or stay home and not make any money.

"A cold or something like that puts me out of work for a couple days and I am not making any money. I can't pay my bills," Collin said.

According to the Bay Area Workforce Development Board, many people who are making poverty or in the ALICE zone (right about poverty) face this issue.

"The study demonstrates clearly one in four find themselves in this situation," said Jim Golembeski, the board's executive director.

He says the only option is for people to find a job that gives good benefits.

"Get out of where you are and where you are struggling and get into that decent job that gives you enough pay and benefits," Golembeski said.

A situation Collin agrees with.

"Realistically that is all you have," Collin said. "Unless you want to roll the dice on your future and your health."
