MADISON, Wis. (NBC 26) -- The replacement for the late Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg has created a big debate in Washington. President Trump Tweeting earlier this week that he plans to make his nomination Saturday from the White House.
Wednesday, Wisconsin Republicans and Democrats both publicly weighed in on the issue.
Republican Senator Ron Johnson says he favors the quick nomination and confirmation to fill justice Ginsburg's seat because voters elected Republicans to do so when they chose president Trump and increased the Republican majority in the senate.
"I really feel sorry for whoever President Trump nominates because Democrats, this has become such a vicious process, they're going to do everything they can to destroy that person's reputation. But again I'd take a look at the list of judges that President Trump developed and they're fine people across the board and I'd be happy to support any of them," Sen. Johnson said.
Meanwhile, Democratic Senator, Tammy Baldwin says a Supreme Court nomination should not move forward until voters have cast ballots in this Novembers Election and the elected President and new Senate have taken office.
"The courts are the linchpin in the Republican's anti-health care and anti-choice agenda. And it's not new, it's been going on for decades. And now with the vacancy on the Supreme Court left by the heartbreaking death of Justice Ginsburg, the stakes just couldn't be higher," adds Senator Baldwin.
Members of the U.S. Senate are expected to be back in Washington, D.C. for a vote on the nomination before the election. While Democrats say the next President should make the decision.
