OSHKOSH (NBC 26) — The Oregon/Jackson Street Bridge is closed in downtown Oshkosh, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced Thursday.

The bridge is closed to vehicle traffic to investigate worn gear teeth components. The gears are critical to raising and lowering the bridge.

Currently, WisDOT said the bridge is in the lowered position and closed to marine traffic.

WisDOT said its bridge engineers are developing plans to raise one leaf of the Oregon/Jackson Street bridge to the upright position and secure the lift span. This allows marine traffic to pass and closes the bridge to vehicles and pedestrians.

Vehicles can use the Main Street (US 45) bridge or the Wisconsin Street bridge (WIS 44) while the bridge is in the upright position.

WisDOT bridge engineers discovered the issue Wednesday while conducting a routine inspection. The bridge is closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic until a more thorough assessment is complete.

The repair scope, schedule, and costs have not been determined at this point, WisDOT said in a news release. WisDOT will release further information when available.
