WINNEBAGO COUNTY (NBC 26) -- Governor Tony Evers has appointed Cheryl Brehmer as the new coroner for Winnebago County.
Appointed to the new coroner position on Thursday, Cheryl Brehmer is not new to the Winnebago County Coroner's Office. Brehmer has worked in the office since 2012 and investigated over 1,000 on-scene deaths, the Governor's office said.
“Ms. Brehmer will be an excellent Coroner and will serve the citizens of Winnebago County with a high degree of professionalism,” said Governor Evers. “Through her prior service to the county as both a Deputy Coroner and Chief Deputy Coroner, Ms. Brehmer possesses both the medical knowledge and the compassion necessary to lead the coroner's office.”
According to a press release, in addition to her new position as coroner, she also serves on Winnebago County's Child Death Review Team, the Overdose Fatality Review Team, and assists in training the Victim Crisis Response Team.
Brehmer's appointment comes after the previous coroner, Barry Busby, resigned in August. The County Board censured him with a vote of no confidence. According to the resolution, Busby was accused of sexual harassment and being away from work at the taxpayer's expense.
