WINNEBAGO COUNTY — Over a period of 24 hours this weekend, the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office says it received 46 misdial calls to 911. A "misdial" is when someone accidentally dials 911 and they are not in need of emergency assistance.
In a Facebook post, the Sheriff's Office said 30 of those calls were placed from the CUSA grounds. Seven calls were placed from various bodies of water and nine were placed at other locations in the county.
The Sheriff's Office says the 46 calls do not account for all of the other 911 misdials that other police agencies within Winnebago County responded to during the weekend.
"We know some settings on smart phones allow for emergency dialing," the Sheriff's Office says. "So if the 911 Comm Center calls and leaves a message saying 'your phone just called us, please call us back'....please call us back."
The Sheriff's Office says if you, or your phone, accidentally calls 911, you are asked to stay on the line and let dispatch know that you don't have an emergency.
