(NBC 26) -- High school sports in Wisconsin will return in the fall but they will be starting a bit later. That's the decision from the WIAA Board of Control, who on Thursday witnessed its members vote eight to three in support fall sports in 2020 being played. The decision allows practice for golf, tennis, swimming and cross country to begin on August 17th. The board decided that sports with a higher risk of COVID-19 spreading would start practice on September 7th. Those later starting sports include football, soccer and volleyball.

"We are best off to look at how can we provide opportunities for kids to get together, give them those experiences and go as far as we can to have an event. I think it's pointless to try and project what we might be able to do in November and certainly in March," says Dave Anderson the Executive Director of WIAA.

For now, the board says they are not in support of any type of state championship tournaments being conducted at the end of a sports season because it would likely draw crowds. But, they are open to suggestions about a regional championship game for schools to wrap up their sport's seasons.
