OSHKOSH, Wis. — The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office said it got 46 misdials in a 24-hour span this weekend.
On Monday, we visited the dispatch center to see what happens when you accidentally dial 911.
"It definitely is time and resources on both ends," Captain Lara Vendola-Messer said.
If a caller stays on the line after dialing 911, dispatch can get that person's information, make sure they're okay, and that ends it.
"If you do hang up, unfortunately then we do have to try to call you back, get into contact with you," dispatcher Noah Henke said. "Then we will have to send an officer out to you just to verify everything is okay because you disconnected."
Officials said that around the county or on the water, it can take an officer up to an hour to find the source of a misdial.
"It's imperative that people stay on the line, or if they hang up right away at least answer the phone when our dispatch calls back because they will call back immediately to try to verify some of that information," Vendola-Messer said.
