APPLETON (NBC 26) — Our local volunteers spend hundreds, even thousands, of hours every year, dedicating themselves to our community. Tonight, we can take just a few hours to celebrate them.
“We live in a very wonderful area," said Susan Vanden Heuvel Executive Director for Volunteer Fox Cities. "We all live and work and play here, so we all want to celebrate what we do every day.“
Today starts with around 150 volunteers going out into the community, working on different volunteer projects.
“They don’t know where they’re going or what they’re doing," said Vanden Heuvel. "They’ve gotten clues for the last week that gives them suggestions of what to wear, what they might be doing.“
Then in the afternoon, the Timber Rattlers stadium parking lot turns into a block party, open to the public.
“Bring your lawn chairs, you can sit here in front of the stage, listen to the band, enjoy the food trucks and just have a nice evening," said Vanden Heuvel.
Tonight is an opportunity for people to learn more about local nonprofits, so they can hopefully gather more dedicated volunteers.
“Rhey can really use some helping hands so they can meet their missions in the community," said Vanden Heuvel. "Volunteering leads to better health, it also makes us happier, and it feels good when you’re doing something for somebody else.“
The block party starts at 4 p.m. and goes until 9 p.m. Anyone who comes out has the chance to play some carnival games to learn about area nonprofits and win some pretty big prizes.
