OSHKOSH (NBC 26) -- The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh announced they have been asked to open their Oshkosh campus to assist with potential housing of coronavirus patients.
The University said Governor Tony Evers reached out to the UW System over the weekend to develop a plan to identify alternative sites. They are working with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and others universities to find locations if the state's need for patient housing exceeds the capacity of healthcare facilities.
University leadership say they began expediting the move-out of Oshkosh campus residence hall students Saturday. They note that students who remain on campus will not be housed in the same residence halls as potential patients.
According to the University, patients housed on campus will be those with mild illness who do not require treatment in a hospital. The University community has been asked to volunteer to work in various capacities if patients are brought onto campus.
At this time there are no known coronavirus cases at UW-Oshkosh.
