OSHKOSH (NBC 26) -- UW Oshkosh (UWO) announced Thursday it will open its Oshkosh, Fond du Lac and Fox Cities campuses this fall.

"It's going to be a unique semester; it's certainly going to be a memorable one for our students, staff and faculty," said UW-Oshkosh Police Chief Kurt Leibold.

The campuses closed back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic and the school switched to online learning.

The university says it will welcome students back September 9, representing no change in start date.

UWO will offer in-person instruction as well as online courses for large classes. Students will be living in the residence halls. Dining halls will be open.

"Everybody is going to have to take a pledge to do their best to follow the fundamentals we've laid out," Leibold added. "On personal hygiene, distancing, screening, masks will be required, self assessment app, testing, tracing, and disinfecting."

The university says it will give students options regarding online or in-person classes. Adding, there are no 'consequences' in place for not following their rules, but maintain they will address a situation if someone is not complying.

"This isn't about punishment, it's about educating and trying to create that environment," said Chancellor Andy Leavitt. "You don't see people smoking on campus anymore, that's largely because we don't go around and enforce it, but there's enough peer pressure around, it simply doesn't happen."
