OSHKOSH, Wis. (NBC 26) — According to UW System President Tommy Thompson, 1,402 nursing, pharmacy and healthcare students have participated in the university's program to help provide COVID-19 vaccines in exchange for a $500 tuition credit.

"And I couldn't be prouder," Thompson said. "You're individuals in the nursing school, pharmaceutical school that are doing a tremendous job to help out Wisconsin. As I've always said, when there's a problem, turn to the university. We want to help."

Thompson said this real-world experience during the pandemic helps students put their classroom learning to the test.

"I think they're signing up because first off, it's good experience," Thompson said. "They like the work, that's what they're going to school for. They have an opportunity. Number two, they see the need."

UW-Oshkosh nursing student Hannah Konkler says she always knew a medical career would be in her future, but she's been particularly inspired by other nurses during the pandemic.

"I think though its pretty amazing how everyone is able to adapt and work together and pretty much got through it," Konkler said. "Not yet, but almost."

The university is offering the same students a second $500 credit opportunity for participating this summer between May 23 and Aug. 31.

"I mean everyone I know at least was like let's do it because I mean, one, you're getting the experience; and two, you're getting money off your tuition, which is a big deal," Konkler said.
