FOND DU LAC COUNTY (NBC 26) — A UPS worker is being credited for catching a scam when someone tried to ship $22,560 in cash in a parcel, the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office said Friday.

Earlier this week, the sheriff's office said Fond du Lac Police Detective Vance Henning received information from UPS that they believed they intercepted a package involved in the scamming of a Fond du Lac County resident from the Waupun area.

After contacting UPS and tracking down the resident listed on the return label, authorities met with the senior citizen and determined the citizen had been victim to a scam. The sheriff's office said the parcel contained $22,560 in cash.

According to the sheriff's office, these scammers used internet and phone communications to convince the victim to send money to an address in California.

The sheriff's office also said an employee at the Fond du Lac UPS Store recognized that something did not appear right when the elderly victim brought the package to the store for delivery. This employee reached out to the distribution center and alerted personnel to the suspicious circumstances, the sheriff's office said.

"The Sheriff’s Office is grateful this UPS employee had the wherewithal to recognize the concerning circumstances involving the shipping of this parcel and that their actions had such a positive impact on our community," the sheriff's office said on Facebook.

Fond du Lac County authorities are investigating this case.
