GREEN BAY, Wis. (NBC 26) - Some larger metro areas in Wisconsin, like Milwaukee, are reporting having a snowplow driver shortage. But locally, in Green Bay, that doesn't seem to be the case.
At the Green Bay Public Works Department management say last year they did notice some of their drivers opting for early retirement in the midst of the pandemic. But today, while they do have some openings yet available, they've managed to retain the majority of their staff despite a job market that is offering many drivers top dollar to be recruited.
Green Bay's Public Works Director, Steve Grenier says through offerings including good benefits, retirement plans, and steady work year-round they have managed to be prepared for the winter months ahead.
"Sometimes contractors get to the end of construction season, and they are laying folks off. Where we have that more steady, more stable employment history here...I've heard the term the great resignation being used and we're just not seeing that" says Grenier.
Green Bay's Public Works director adds that while the pay in the private sector might be appealing for some, steady work and the opportunity to sleep at home every night in town continues to bring in top candidates to city jobs locally.
