GREEN BAY (NBC26) — Although Thursday April 1st is the legal deadline for most voters to request an absentee ballot, today is the practical deadline to return your ballot by mail. For many local voters, this local election is more important than others.
Wisconsin has a couple highly contested races this spring, like the one for state superintendent. Deborah Kerr, former Brown Deer Superintendent, is looking to decentralize the Department of Public Instruction.
“It’s time to get the instruction back and to our educational system," said Kerr. "Our kids and families aren’t winning right now, and I have a vision to create a world-class education system that is the highest performing in the country.“
Jill Underly, Pecatonica Superintendent, wants fair and full funding for public schools.
“I want to get more early childhood education, more high-quality childcare, birth-to-three programming," said Underly. "Also work on recruiting and retaining some really passionate educators, mental health funding for for kids and then, of course, revising our school finance formula.”
Appleton officials are expecting around 30 percent voter turnout. But still, it’s been tough recruiting poll workers.
“Since November has come and gone, and that was the big exciting election, we’ve struggled to find workers for February, the spring primary and the April election," said Kami Lynch, City Clerk for Appleton.
Many Northeast Wisconsin counties also have school board members on the ballot.
“The spring elections are always the local races," said Lynch. "Kind of the stuff that it’s closer to home that people can see a difference right before their eyes in their communities.“
