GREEN BAY (WGBA) -- The 2020 deadline for tax filing is approaching. Local tax advisers in Green Bay say this has been one of the busiest times in recent memory.
"There has been a lot," said Jill Schoenwalder, and adviser with Tax Management Services. "It seems a lot of people waited till the last minute.
The state Department of Revenue said 2.8 million out of an expect 3 million already filed leading up the July deadline - which was extended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"We closed our offices and went virtual," Schoenwalder said. "We are open now and people thought the coronavirus would subside. It hasn't and people are now scrambling to get it all done."
She says people this year have new questions and concerns. She is constantly being asked about what to do with stimulus checks, unemployment and small business loans.
"Those questions come up just as often as the taxes themselves," she said.
The IRS is not pushing back its deadline anymore. July 15th is the day this year. Schoenwalder says anyone not ready to file should apply for an extension. However, she says payments are still do tomorrow.
"Filing for an extension is good for those not ready to fully file yet," She said. "People will still have to pay. If they don't, there will be penalties and interest will start being added."
