GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- There is a rally underway in downtown Green Bay to support the United States Postal Service.
Demonstrators are pushing for emergency funding to maintain what organizers say is a crucial role for mail-in voting. While this isn't just any election year, we're still in a pandemic, and there's a lot of discussion around the safety of in-person voting.
Over 800,000 voters in Wisconsin have already requested absentee ballots for the November election.
The rally in Green Bay comes on the first day of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's senate testimony about his recent policy changes that include reducing the number of mail-sorting machines in order to make the organization more profitable in the long term.
According to American Postal Workers Union President Northeast Wisconsin Area Chapter Kelly Heaney, there are two machines pulled out of service in Green Bay.
The point of Friday’s rally is to encourage anyone concerned about this to call their congressional representatives.
