GREEN BAY, Wis. (NBC 26) -- Students, faculty, and staff spent Martin Luther King Jr. Day out in the community helping out local organizations.

The women's hockey team was at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store sorting donations. The men's basketball team was at Paul's Pantry sorting food.

"St. Norbert held kind of like a meeting, and we talked about MLK's message and what he really aspired and the legacy he kept on about always giving back and treating your neighbors with respect, and what you have you give back and this is just out little piece of giving what we have," said Emily Boyce, a junior on the women's hockey team at St. Norbert College.

She said she enjoys being able to help the community with her team.

"You learn about how fortunate you are because you see the problems other people are going through, and you see that your problems are way smaller, and it feels great to help people out and know you're making a difference," said Jordan Newman, a senior on the men's basketball team at St. Norbert College.

Students also volunteered at Bellin Cancer Team, Einstein Project, Salvation Army Thrift Store and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

More student-athletes are set to teach elementary school students about King's message of respect for others on Tuesday.
