DE PERE (NBC 26) -- People were out shopping at local businesses for a good reason as shop owners celebrated the 10th annual Small Business Saturday.

Shoppers and diners could grab a Shop Small Dine Small Passport from any participating location starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. Each time customers made a purchase at a participating store, they received a stamp on their passport to be entered to win prizes valued over $500.

"Right now people are looking for an authentic experience, and shopping at a local retailer can really provide that when its done well," said Troy Dempsey, owner of The Heel Shoe Fitters. "I think that's one of the things our kind of businesses provide and people like to celebrate that."

American Express says that for every dollar spent at a small business, 67 cents stays within that community.
