GREENVILLE (NBC 26) -- If you drive on Highway 15, between Greenville and Hortonville, you'll notice a lot of signs telling drivers to slow down.
Orange “SLOW DOWN” signs are stacked right next to each other for several miles on that stretch of Highway 15. Recent events and accidents have called people in this area to demand change for safer conditions along the road.
People started putting the signs up late last week and through the weekend. A Hortonville High School student recently died on Highway 15.
Residents are pushing for change from the Department of Transportation (DOT) to make this stretch safer in any way possible. They are also using the signs to remind drivers to slow down, not be distracted, and be aware of people in this area.
"I wanted to do this, to build awareness of this road, just because they say 'slow down' it means more than that. It means pay attention, don't be distracted, and that's why the signs say the same thing," said Kim Sippola, who organized putting the signs up.
Wisconsin DOT said they do have a plan in place to make it easier for traffic to merge onto lanes and Highway 15.
"Our number one mission at the DOT is to have a safe highway," said Mark Kantola, with the Department of Transportation. "By expanding the lanes, we'll be able to handle that capacity in a much safer manner."
That project is not supposed to be completed till 2021. The organizers of the signs, however, want that to be expedited.
