OSHKOSH (NBC 26) -- The shooting at Oshkosh West High School demonstrates how school resource officers play an important role in student safety on campus.
Authorities are not releasing the name of the officer involved in Tuesday’s incident, but students told NBC 26 that he is a well-known figure at the school.
Some described him as fun and light-hearted, who would do anything to keep students safe. These types of officers are employed and trained by police departments and assigned to schools.
Parents and students say they are fortunate because no one else got hurt.
"Why did they have to stab him, what was the point?” said student Brookelyn Weber. “I cried like five times, because I'm kind of close with the police officer, like he was really nice, he was really cool, what was the point? "
Students and parents also said they want both the student and officer to recover from their injuries.
