CALUMET COUNTY (NBC 26) — The Calumet County Sheriff's Office released new details Thursday about human remains that were found earlier this week at High Cliff State Park.
"The human remains found at High Cliff State park are that of an older post-adolescent male," Sheriff Mark Wiegert wrote in an updated Facebook post.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, there are ceremonial burial grounds throughout the park. However, the Sheriff said Thursday that the recently found remains are not associated with any Native American burial site. The remains do appear, however, to have been at the location for an extended period of time.
The Sheriff said the hikers who initially found the remains have been identified and are cooperating with law enforcement. The Sheriff's Office asks that the community respect their privacy.
The Sheriff's Office along with the State Crime Lab and anthropologists are continuing their investigation at the site. The upper park area will remain closed through noon on Friday.
