Ruby's Pantry working to combat rural poverty and food insecurity

DENMARK (NBC 26) -- Ruby's Pantry in Denmark got started in October of 2018. It's an idea that spread from a small church community in Minnesota about helping your neighbors.

Ruby's Pantry has spread now to several communities. The Denmark location operates out of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. How it works is each guest pays $20, which covers the transportation and storage of the food, and they then get two totes full of food. Each month the food list varies and the value roughly $50 to $150 worth. You can follow Ruby's Pantry - Denmark on its Facebook page. They typically try to release a list of the food items for that month once the food truck arrives at the church. The next time there will be a curbside pantry is April 28th.

The goal is to help people. That could mean making sure someone gets food so they can eat and feed their family, but it can also help people move funds to help pay medical bills.

Pastor Andy Zoreb with Our Savior's Lutheran Church says the volunteers are so passionate and want to help others. They have all worked so hard to ensure safety for their guests and volunteers. The pantry has turned into a curbside pickup pantry since the coronavirus outbreak, but that hasn't deterred their passion to serve the community.

Typically you would need to register to take part in the pantry, but Ruby's Pantry has temporarily suspended pre-registration. To continue to learn more about Ruby's Pantry you can check out their website or follow them on Facebook. If you want to help support Ruby's Pantry, you can do so by mailing a check to Our Savior's Lutheran Church at 435 Wisconsin Avenue in Denmark. You can write the check to the church, but in the memo line, please write "Ruby's Pantry" so that it goes towards the pantry.
