BROWN COUNTY, Wis. — In a few weeks time school buses everywhere will be on the move.
"We want people to be aware that they're going to be out there and be aware and looking for them," Lamers Bus Lines manager Jim Gamble said. "Our biggest fear is when we're stopped and picking up or dropping off kids."
When that's happening, a yellow light will come on and give drivers a warning. Then, the bus will put it's red lights on and its stop sign out. It's Wisconsin law that drivers on both sides of the road stop regardless of how many lanes there are. However, drivers on the opposite side of the bus do not need to stop on a divided highway if there's a center median.
Gamble said the laws aren't always followed.
"Unfortunately it's almost a daily occurrence," he said. "Somewhere, sometime there's somebody not paying attention and distracted and buzzing by it or in a hurry."
On the first day of school this year the Green Bay Police Department will have officers at schools throughout the city. One reason is to make kids feel safe and another is to show drivers that they're out there.
"Making sure people are following the pedestrian laws, making sure people are following the school bus laws, giving people adequate distance, and most importantly - slow down," Green Bay Police Commander Kevin Warych said.
