GREEN BAY, Wis. (NBC 26) -- The murder of George Floyd sparked an international movement. Over the last year across Wisconsin, Black Lives Matter protests sprouted up in both communities large and small.
The overwhelming majority of these protests were peaceful, and they addressed issues related to police reform, racial injustice, and the discrimination that black men and women all too often experience from police. And while the movements across northeast Wisconsin became commonplace for nearly a year, many found them partaking in such a movement, for the first time.
"Honestly, it's more of a sickening feeling, that I'm sick of it happening. I feel like I needed to join the cause and finally do what I have to do to put an end to it," said protester Deangelo Fonder of Wautoma back in late May of 2020.
While incidents including damage to property, looting, and assault did occur at a couple of protests in Green Bay, Appleton, and Kenosha; instances like that were rare and peaceful protests were more of the norm across Wisconsin
