Quarantine 101: doctors say you still need to stay home for 14 days if you're exposed to COVID-19

GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — Community spread of COVID-19 is happening all over Wisconsin, and doctors are urging those who are exposed to quarantine for 14 days. It's not a soft recommendation, said Dr. Zach Baeseman, ThedaCare family medicine practitioner and Associate Medical Director of Primary Care.

“These aren’t our guesses," said Baeseman. "This is now the standard of care. We know that all this stuff works.”

Doctors are still finding the incubation period for symptoms to show is still anywhere from two days to two weeks.

“I see patients every day that have not had it, they don’t know anyone who’s had it, and so if I can’t see it, taste it, smell it or feel it, it doesn’t exist," said Baeseman. "And that’s not true. You’re just going to have to take our word for it as professionals, as medical professionals who have trained for decades to do this kind of work.”

If someone in your home tests positive for COVID-19, isolate them in a spare room, while you quarantine as well. If you live alone, try to find someone now who can get groceries for you just in case you do get sick.

“These are great conversations to be having," said Baeseman. We should be checking in on our neighbors, our family members, our loved ones, making sure they have what they need, making sure if we are able to do more and help other people that we’re able to do that.”

The 'COVID fatigue' is real -- people are tired of wearing masks, bored of not socializing.

“It’s been nine months now that this has been the news and people are just sick and tired of hearing about it," he said.

But right now, it's more important than ever to do your part.
