MANITOWOC — A ribbon cutting ceremony Friday celebrated the completion of the project to improve the SS Badger Carferry.
This project updated the 70-year-old docking and birthing facilities in Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan. The ferry service takes people and cars across Lake Michigan.
According to a news release, the work on the Manitowoc side included the installation of a 420-foot timber fender system and a sheet pile dock wall. A 260-foot timber fender wall system was installed on the Ludington side. The Ludington work also included renovation of existing mooring wall dolphins.
Construction began October 2018 and was finished May 2019. The news release marking the end of the project says S.S. Badger was able to maintain its regular schedule.
