DE PERE — Police said a woman was assaulted Tuesday morning while walking with her infant child along the East River Trail in De Pere.

Police said during a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the victim's husband called the police when his wife and child did not return from a routine walk.

The young child was not seriously injured and was found lying in the grass. The woman was found about 40 to 50 yards away from the child. The woman is alive, but police would not give her exact condition.

When asked during the news conference, police would not disclose whether the woman had been sexually assaulted.

Police said they are looking for a person of interest in the case, but would not provide a suspect description. They cautioned the public to be aware and take safety precautions, such as avoiding the trail at night and traveling in groups.

Part of the East River Trail will remain closed for at least several hours while police investigate.
