APPLETON (NBC 26) — Appleton Police officers are investigating a fatal shooting on the south side of Appleton.
According to police, the shooting happened early Sunday morning. Police said officers were sent to the 2800 block of E. Newberry Street for a suspicious person call at around 4:30 a.m. While responding to that call, officers were notified of a second 911 call indicating a stranger had broken into a neighboring home.
Police said the caller reported being in a bedroom with the door locked and could hear an unknown male yelling in the residence. A short time later officers were notified a gun had been fired.
Police said officers arrived at the home and found a male with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.
No one living in the home was hurt. Appleton Police said officers are not looking for any suspects and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Appleton Police said more information will be released Monday.
