APPLETON (NBC 26) — Betsy Rachubinski walked into her salon one morning to find a surprise that moved her to tears.
“I came into a big box in our room and a letter," she said. "I open the letter, and it was from a woman who recently lost her daughter to cancer, and she donated all of her hats and scarves back to us and told us what an important service this is for the community and how much she supports us, and it was really heartwarming to receive that.“
Rachubinski founded Peaceful Purpose almost three years ago, and her mission is to provide a free wig to anyone suffering from medical hair loss.
“Wigs can range anywhere from 800 up to 2,000 dollars," she said.
Peaceful purpose clients choose from nine different display wigs, try them on and get the perfect color match. Cancer patients and others can get free head shavings and take home up to three hats or scarves.
“I had no idea what I was doing, but I just followed my heart, and it’s my passion," said Rachubinski. "I love being able to use my skills to help people in our community and give back.“
Community members have really stepped up, whether through fund-raising or knitting and donating hats, she said.
“I believe that there’s no reason that people in our community cannot help fund that for people that are struggling with hair loss," said Rachubinski. "Because it’s such an emotional, devastating time for somebody.“
Peaceful Purpose will always accept monetary donations, and right now the nonprofit is most in need of summer hats: lightweight ones with brims. You can mail or drop off hats and scarves to the salon at the NAAVA Salon and Spa, located at 3505 Commerce Court in Appleton.
