GREEN BAY (WGBA) -- The Green Bay Area Public School District is still working on a plan to have in-person classes resume this fall.
"We are really focusing on a way to have class in person this year," said Eric Vanden Heuvel, the president of the board. "I think that is what most people want. However there are challenges."
Vanden Heuvel said they are planning to re-work every detail of the district. This includes restructuring in-person classes, lunches, transportation and more.
"We are re-evauluating the whole system,"
Parents are offering mixed views. Some are in favor of resuming class, while others are more concerned.
"I would like to see my daughter going back to school as normal in the fall," said Andrea Edbauer, a parent of a soon to be kindergartner. "I know there are risks, but from what I've read the pros are better than the cons."
Edbauer thinks kindergarten is a crucial step for her daughter to learn reading and writing. She said it would be better with in person with a teacher present.
"Kindergarten is hands on," Edbauer said. "It concerns me if they have to do learning from home."
Others offer a different perspective.
"I don't know if a full classroom is the best option for anyone," said Erin Pennings, whose daughter is also young.
Pennings is preparing for the possibility of homeschooling this fall.
"There is still so much we don't know," she said. "I don't have all the pieces in place, but have I considered it? Yes."
School districts in Brown County are still working on plans for the fall. According to Vanden Heuvel, they have daily conversations with health officials. The problem they face is monitoring the virus.
"It changes daily," Vanden Heuvel said. "It is frustrating and it is part of the reason why our message has not come out yet because we are still sifting through the same information everyone else is."
