ASHWAUBENON (NBC 26) — The Ashwaubenon Department of Public Safety and the Green Bay Packers announced a joint effort Friday to ensure all Ashwaubenon Public Safety Officers are outfitted with body worn cameras.
The initiative, which totals more than $500,000, provides 51 body cameras, about a dozen in-car cameras and 20 upgraded tazers. The purchases were made possible in part by a nearly $200,000 donation by the Packers.
"One of the great things about having these videos is we can learn as officers by reviewing these videos," Ashwaubenon Chief of Public Safety Brian Uhl said. "Any type of incident we have, we can take a look at that and we can use it as a tool to help educate the rest of our officers on what we maybe could have done better, or what went well."
If one camera is activated by an officer pulling their tazer or firearm, the signal will activate any other officer's camera within a roughly 30-foot radius as well, Uhl said.
"This program benefits our officers," he said. "Really, it's a protection for our officers. Instead of just seeing a short clip of what may be captured on a cell phone, it really provides the entire picture for everyone to see and analyze."
