GREEN BAY, Wis. — Packers fans continue to mourn the death of legendary quarterback Bart Starr. Fans have placed flowers and a Packers foam finger at the helm of a Bart Starr statue outside the Resch Center.
They say Starr leaves so many lasting memories of his playing days: such as the Lombardi-era Super Bowls and the unforgettable quarterback sneak in the Ice Bowl.
On the field, Starr was one of the most decorated players in franchise history. Off the field is where fans say Number 15 truly distinguished himself from some of the other greats.
"Everybody loved him, and he was a true gentleman,” says Packers fan Tom Maher. “In this sport, that's probably pretty unrealistic, but that's the way he was."
Every year, one NFL player gets recognized for outstanding character and leadership on the field and in the community; that award is named after Bart Starr.
