GREEN BAY, Wis (NBC 26) -- Wisconsin Badgers legend JJ Watt is now a free agent. The Houston Texans have released Watt on Friday morning, following a request by Watt, who had one year left on his contract.

With all the excitement created by Watt's decision, Packers fans are starting to get at the least hopeful, that Watt might be considering a return to Wisconsin where he grew up to play with the Packers.

At Lambeau Field, fans aren't sure what to make of JJ Watt parting ways with the Texans. But many are hopeful that the ten-year veteran of the NFL will come to Title Town to spend his final years as a Green Bay Packer.

Watt has been vocal over the years about his admiration for his home state of Wisconsin. And back in 2019 when the Texans came here for a pre-season practice, Watt spoke with media about how when he was a kid he dreamt about one day playing at Lambeau Field. Today Packers fans sounded off on the potential of Watt playing out his dream, and career, as a Green Bay Packer.

"Being a local Wisconsin guy, I think he'd be awesome. The fans would love it. Hopefully, he would love it. I think his folks would love it," says Molly Enright of Door County.

"He's just a good guy you know, and that's what we need around here, more good guys that can play football really well," adds David Guevara of Frankfort, Kentucky.

Watt has not been vocal about what his next move in the NFL will be. But he did mention he's looking forward to a new opportunity in a Twitter post Friday morning, as he sported a Wisconsin Badgers sweatshirt.
