MAINE, Wis. (NBC 26) -- Firefighters responded to a call in the Town of Maine at around 6 p.m. Tuesday evening. That's where tornado winds damaged a local home's roof and destroyed some of its windows.

WEATHER STORIES

According to the Nichols Fire Department, a funnel cloud touched down and tore some of the roofing and side panels off the house -- inhabited by a family and children -- on Navarino Road.

Right next to the house is a small farm owned by the Black Creek area family. Authorities say the fence was ripped apart and cattle tried to escape.

There were no injuries to the inhabitants or the animals.

"In the house, they saw it coming across through the woods," Nichols Assistant Fire Chief Denis Burmeister told NBC 26. "The trees started to split open and they decided they better get to the basement. … I was standing outside watching it and saw it turn into a funnel and hit the ground and could see debris flying in the air."

The home is still inhabitable, but there's no timetable for when the family will return.

Nichols Fire reports it saw a number of tree limbs down and one that fell on a power line after Tuesday night's storms. The issues have been resolved and the department says the Maine house was the only structure with significant damage in the area.

The home is still inhabitable, but there's no timetable for when the family will return. Firefighters worked to patch the home's roof for nearly two hours.
