OSHKOSH (NBC 26) — May 21-27 is National Safe Boating Week. As more people head out on the water to enjoy the summer weather, it’s important to keep boating safety tips in mind in case of an emergency.
“Usually the four leading causes of accidents when you’re out on the water are inattentive driving, inexperienced driving, recklessness and speeding,” said Justin Dejager, the program and marketing coordinator with the Winnebago County Parks Department.
According to the U.S Coast Guard, there was a 26% increase in injuries and a 25% increase in boating fatalities in 2020. Dejager says the leading cause of boating deaths is drowning, which is why it's essential to keep life jackets on board, especially when boating with children.
“It is required to have life jackets for everyone on the boats as well as a floatation device you can throw out to people as well," Dejager said. "Having those life jackets on before something bad happens is really important, especially for younger kids.”
Another lead cause of boating accidents is drinking. Just like driving a car, Dejager says it’s just as important to be sober when operating a boat.
“This time of year, people love going boating, having a few drinks out there. If you’re going to do that it’s the same as driving a vehicle on the road,” Dejager said.
Remembering to keep things like a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher on board as well as checking for dangerous weather conditions are other ways to stay prepared.
"Lake Winnebago, it’s a big lake, kind of shallow, so when the wind starts turning up it gets pretty rough out there so always check the weather forecast before you go out,” Dejager said.
