GREEN BAY — A student at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College won a lawsuit over the school after she claims the school limited her First Amendment rights.
Polly Olson was handing out heart shaped messages on Valentines Day in 2018 with Bible quotes on them. She handed them out all over the campus, which violated the schools public assembly policy.
"I had a very small restricted area where I can exercise this freedom," Olson said. "I was handing them out anywhere I went."
The police required students to get permission before peacefully assembling, and they can only do in certain areas. Olson claimed she should be able to assemble anywhere on campus. She filed a lawsuit one year ago, and on Friday a judge ruled the policy was unconstitutional. The school now has to change that policy.
"If you decide to have a protest or performance or a picket, you can certainly use the common spaces as long as you are respectful," said Jeff Rafn, the President of NWTC.
Olson now aims to helping other colleges with free speech issues.
"Freedom still is something on campuses that needs to be respected and I am very happy the judge saw that," Olson said.
