TOWN OF MAINE, Wis. (NBC 26) -- Just about ten miles northwest of Black Creek, in the Town of Maine, the National Weather Service confirms a tornado briefly touched down on Tuesday evening.
In the Town of Maine, there's no shortage of beautiful countryside to take in.
"I've taken a lot of photos out my window. I have some really nice photos of houses and sunsets," says Dave Betters.
On Tuesday evening Betters was taking in another picture-perfect night until he was interrupted.
"I got an alert on my cell phone of a tornado in the area."
Betters peaked out his window and, in the distance, about a mile away, he saw exactly what the National Weather Service was warning him about.
"There it was, big as life. That's when I got a little nervous and went to my basement at that time," says Betters.
The National Weather Service says the twister didn't touch down for very long, and it was relatively small as well.
"Wasn't a very wide tornado or a very long one. It was more narrow and pretty short lived," says Meteorologist Kurt Kotenberg.
Kotenberg says the tornado touched down in an open field off of Deerview Road and Navarino Road. The tornado that only touched down for a couple of minutes managed to damage crops, a home, and personal property.
"We did see a gentleman who had his car flipped over by the tornado and also some damage to their roofing, shingles, to the side of the house," says Kotenberg.
Current estimates from NWS indicate that the tornado was producing wind speeds up to 90 miles per hour, and it left at least one homeowner with some serious damage with several uprooted trees. But many didn't notice the fortunately limited damage until the following morning because they were playing it safe.
"It must have come back down and hit some tree tips there, and it must have lifted again. But I didn't see any of that cause I was in the basement at that time," adds Betters.
