GREEN BAY — After two deadly mass shootings in the United States, some people in Northeast Wisconsin are unsure if changing gun laws would prevent more shootings.
"It's a horror," said Carlton Kirchner from Kaukana. "A gun is a gun. It's a piece of equipment. The people are the problem. Young people don't have any respect for themselves or or other people."
To obtain a handgun, dealers must complete a background check through the Department of Justice. Background checks for assault rifles and machine guns must be completed through the FBI. Others in the Green Bay Area would like the state and country to impose tougher gun laws.
"I think a myriad of things need to happen," said Jeff Dickert from De Pere. "We talk about guns and we need to do something there. Also, we talk about people's mental health and I think we need to enforce laws about people putting stuff out there."
Dickert and Kirchner may have different opinions when it comes to gun laws, but they both agree the deaths from the mass shootings are a tragedy.
"The loss of life is unbelievable," Kirchner said.
"Its almost at the point where we are not shocked anymore," Dickert said. "Thats the sad part."
